Things to do in Kenmare (even in the rain)
Kenmare is a beautiful town tucked away on the south west coast of Ireland. Nestled between the mountains of the Beara peninsula and the beautiful Ring of Kerry Kenmare is also known as Neidin (little nest) in Irish. With easy access to mountains, the sea, rivers and a multitude of picturesque lakes you will immediately realise the unique beauty of its landscape
Beauty is all very well but what is there to do? Naturally if you are the outdoors type your imagination is your limit. Here are a few ideas that the staff at Emerald Outdoors like to get up to in our spare time.

Use your Feet
Getting out and about for a walk in the Kingdom of Kerry is easy, practically everywhere you look you will find a walking path. Generally it is only the weather that stops people from exploring but as we all know people don’t come to Ireland for a tan! Be prepared for the weather, expect that you might get a bit wet, after all there’s always a hot shower to go back to.. Some of the most amazing views and experiences that we’ve had in Ireland have been during the ‘worst’ weather conditions. Think about it, Ireland is surrounded by water and full of amazing waterways, it is part of the charm of our land. The more rain that falls, the more dramatic and powerful the landscape will feel as majestic waterfalls, trickling streams and roaring rivers come to life within a stone’s throw of Kenmare. There is a hidden beauty behind the rain in Ireland so make sure you go out and experience it. |
Experience the Sea
Given that Kenmare is ringed by the Caha mountains and the MacGillycuddy Reeks it is easy to find yourself looking up, but sometimes we forget to look down. Kenmare Bay boasts the furthest inland seawater in Ireland. What does this mean? We at Emerald Outdoors are water babies. We thrive when we are out on the water on our paddleboard or in our kayaks. Being on the water on Kenmare Bay is like entering a different world. There is so much to explore and experience for the interested mind. One of the many reasons we love this bay so much is because of the peace and quiet, the distinct lack of motorised boats on the bay adds to the pleasure of the experience. The ocean covers 70% of our world, never miss a chance to explore it. |
Taste the Kingdom
Kenmare is known for its amazing food. Boasting more restaurants than pubs it is very easy to satisfy your hunger with a selection of food for all taste buds and budgets. The welcoming staff and the attention to detail will leave you wanting more. We are firm believers that hunger creates the tastiest food so after your day out on the hills, walk ways or on the sea go ahead and pick any of the fine eating establishments and we promise you won’t be disappointed. We at Emerald Outdoors have tried all the restaurants in town and we look forward to doing our taste test again. |
Step into History
The heritage town of Kenmare is a wonderful place to explore and find out about Irish history. Within the town itself you have two key areas to check out, the stone circle and the heritage centre (inside the tourist office). When it comes to things to do around Kenmare we always try to step off the beaten track and explore something different. One of our favourite spots to walk the dog is out by the Holy Well around 15 minutes drive from Kenmare on the Sneem road (Kerry Way), you will see a small yellow sign painted on a rock on the left of the road. Did you know that Ireland has around 3000 Holy Wells? These Holy Wells are areas of myth and ritual and are steeped in Irish history. Do a bit of research and maybe you will find good luck or inspiration from the waters of the otherworld. |
After your day out exploring the natural and historical beauty of Kenmare why not join us after dinner for a completely different outdoor experience and discover the hidden world of bioluminescence on a night kayak trip?
